Background

I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and have previously lived in Lewisville, North Carolina and Portland, Oregon before eventually settling in Western Massachusetts. Having always been an avid reader and writer, I started off my college career interested in the humanities, but after taking an introductory computer science course I realized how engaging and relevant a career in technology would be. I soon found myself completely taken aback by the burgeoning world of data science and its limitless applications to a wide variety of domain areas, and started taking as many computer science, math, and statistics classes as I could to appease this curiosity.

Academic Interests

Although I am still discovering which specific subareas I would like to focus on, I am presently fascinated by machine learning and its applications to natural language processing, as well as Bayesian methods in machine learning or otherwise. I hope to eventually study and develop novel methods utilizing text mining in business, healthcare, and creative endeavors, especially in the areas of text summarization and natural language generation. In general, I find the concept of mathematical and statistical modeling very appealing, especially when we can gain valuable insight into the world from such models.

My team and I at Five College Datafest 2017

Outside of my purely academic interests, I enjoy participating on Kaggle and attending data science related events and seminars. When I’m not crunching numbers or analyzing data, I’m generally listening to music, playing guitar or drums, or reading. Some of my greatest memories involve playing with my bands Sleeper Wave and Stunt Meridian, and I enjoy a wide variety of music from heavy metal and punk to jazz and electronic (check out my last.fm profile). Some of my favorite music artists are Tim Hecker, Don Caballero, and Cynic, and my favorite books include David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest and Vladimir Nabokov’s Pale Fire. I also have a Goodreads account to keep track of (much of) what I have read so far, so feel free to check that out as well! Currently Reading: Logicomix by Apostolos Doxiadis & Christos Papadimitriou
